Earlier this year, I was fortunate enough to have the chance to return to New Zealand on not only a stock photography trip, but also to complete a book project which has been nearly 20 years in the making.
It may comes as a surprise to you, considering that I am a UK based photographer, that my first work was published in New Zealand back in 2000. My work was actually published in 4 issues of the New Zealand Wilderness Magazine during the year and it wasn’t until I returned to the UK back in 2001 that Amateur Photographer was my first ever UK magazine feature – perhaps not surprisingly of a portfolio of images from New Zealand. The year 2000 seems such a long time ago now and it is amazing how much has changed over the years.
Unfortunately this years trip to New Zealand was, on a personal level, a bittersweet affair. One of my closest friends was diagnosed with cancer shortly before I left and he took a turn for the worst whilst I was there. He passed away shortly upon my return to the UK.
I have taken longer than normal to start processing these images but the work has now begun in earnest and I thought I would share a dozen of my favourite images. This small portfolio is dedicated in loving memory to my good friend Acki.
