Understanding Lenses

Lenses are slightly underrated compared to cameras. The news that a new camera is due generally receives more interest than a new lens. This is slightly puzzling as a lens is arguably equally as important in the success – or otherwise – of a photo as the camera it is attached to. As mentioned in lesson one, lots of system cameras come with kit lenses. These tend to slightly inferior to other lenses in a manufacturer’s line-up. Either they are made to a strict budget and use more plastic than metal and glass, or they are optically compromised. That does not mean that you cannot create great images with a kit lens, but you may discover its limitations relatively quickly.
